Working for Visual Communication Design

Reporting to the Team Lead, Technical Demonstrator, the Technical Demonstrator in Visual Communication Design works with undergraduate and graduate students in their learning environments, receives direction from the Team Lead, and works closely with Unit Divisional Coordinator, faculty, technical staff, and ATS instructors for course instruction. The Technical Demonstrator is available during the workday to support students and staff in the use of specialized equipment and work areas. This includes computers, specialized design computing software in four computer labs consisting of approximately 60 workstations, and photographic equipment. Works with/trains approximately 400 registered students per annum.

Position

The incumbent is responsible for technical instruction, student health & safety, training, testing, and matters pertaining to the practical realities of operating and maintaining a Visual Communications Design teaching studio with 120 students starting each year with no prior experience or training in a workshop or computer lab setting.

Duties

Technical Demonstrator

  • Teaches technical processes, equipment use, and safe procedures.
  • Demonstrates use of software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud, After Effects) and hardware (e.g., iMacs, printers, cameras).
  • Provides one-on-one consultations to troubleshoot issues and guide students through project development.

Health & Safety Compliance

  • Trains users on safe operation of potentially hazardous tools; manages PPE requirements.
  • Acts as Fire Warden and WHMIS designee; maintains First Aid/CPR certifications.
  • Develops and maintains health and safety documentation in accordance with HSE guidelines.

Repair and Maintenance of Equipment and Facilities

  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance on technical equipment.
  • Liaises with IST on software and hardware issues in computer labs.
  • Maintains and services laser printers.

Management of the VCD Production Facilities

  • Manages inventory and oversees equipment loans.
  • Coordinates with suppliers for procurement and repairs.
  • Oversees hazardous waste disposal and maintains facility cleanliness and safety.

Supervision of the VCD Facilities

  • Supervises student activity, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Manages equipment/material sign-out and locker assignments.
  • Provides first aid and maintains emergency kits.

Administration of the VCD Facilities

  • Supports budget tracking and advises on supply needs.
  • Prepares purchase orders and manages corporate purchasing card.
  • Controls and updates student ONEcard access to studio areas.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Design or equivalent (e.g. BFA, or comparable degree).
  • Experience in design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, animation and motion graphics, UI & UX software).
  • Experience in a range of image-making processes (e.g., photography, lighting, studio).
  • Knowledge and experience of design process, methods, and procedures.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • WHMIS (workplace hazardous materials, information systems) certification.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate orally and in writing, and to work effectively with faculty, students, staff and others with tact, discretion and courtesy.
  • Must be well-organized, flexible, and able to work in diverse situations with demanding deadlines. Able to work efficiently and calmly under pressure.
  • Teaching, instruction, and/or public speaking skills.
  • Experience with student supervision and technical training, particularly in a university setting.
  • Experience with project managing/coordinating.
  • Ability to quickly envision solutions to a variety of technical questions throughout the design process and then effectively communicate those solutions.
  • University-required training (Supervisory Training, Workplace Violence and Harassment, Workplace safety and any other training as required by the University of Alberta and HRHSE) is preferred.
