Working for the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology is a research-intensive unit that pursues dynamic projects in the areas of immunology, virology, and bacteriology. Our research foci include host-pathogen interactions, virus infection and replication, immune responses to pathogens, bacterial pathogenesis, as well as autoimmunity and cancer immunology. Our research goals are to create and improve therapeutic agents, vaccines, and physiological interventions to improve health, and diminish or prevent disease. 

Position Summary

The structural biology laboratory of Kalyan Das at MMI, University of Alberta, Canada invites applications from highly motivated researchers interested in pursuing a career in structure-based drug design using single-particle cryo-EM. A candidate should have a Ph. D. degree in structural biology, molecular biology, chemical biology, biochemistry, or a related field with a proven track record. Strong hands-on experience in protein engineering, protein expression in bacteria and insect cells, and biophysical characterization of proteins and macromolecule assemblies is essential. Knowledge in structural biology is helpful; however, successful candidates will have the training opportunities to carry out structural studies by single-particle cryo-EM. A qualified person should be a team player and should have strong writing and verbal communication skills. 

Our structural biology laboratory is equipped or access to state-of-the-art Krios G4 TEM, Vitrobot Mark IV and Leica GP2, multiple advanced GPU workstations for cryo-EM. The lab is also equipped with Akta Pure 25 integrated with Wyatt Optilab T-rEX, miniDAWN TREOS, and DynoPro NanoStar for purification and characterization of macromolecules

Duties 

  • Expression and purification of protein complexes
  • Design and characterization of macromolecular assemblies
  • Conducting various biophysical and structural biology experiments and analyses.
  • Designing experiments, and maintaining lab instruments
  • Training PhD, masters, and undergraduate researchers
  • Writing manuscripts and grant applications

Qualifications

Ph. D. degree in structural biology, molecular biology, chemical biology, biochemistry, or a related field.
