Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at Enterprise Square, Edmonton.

Position

The Artificial Intelligence Discovery Place (AIDP) at the University of Alberta is seeking a Cloud Solutions Lead to join our dynamic and collaborative team. If you’re passionate about solving real-world problems through cloud technologies and AI/ML innovation, this is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact across sectors.

As the Cloud Solutions Lead, you will design, develop, and deploy scalable, secure, and efficient cloud-based solutions using AWS tools and platforms. Working closely with academic researchers, businesses, startups, and community organizations, you will lead the development of cutting-edge AI applications and help clients realize the transformative potential of AI and cloud technologies.

This role reports to the Director, Innovation & Partnerships and plays a vital role in managing client engagements, mentoring students, and promoting the adoption of emerging technologies. You will be part of a passionate team working to advance the U of A’s vision for innovation and collaboration.

Duties

Solution Development and Deployment

  • Design, develop, and implement cloud-based technical solutions for clients within the Artificial Intelligence Discovery Place, using AWS tools and platforms.
  • Integrate third-party tools, APIs, and services to enhance performance, automation, and security.
  • Develop and deploy ETL workflows and data pipelines for AI/ML models.
  • Ensure all cloud-based solutions adhere to the architectural standards and policies established by the University's Information Services & Technology (IST) unit.
  • Collaborate with IST to gain an understanding of good practices for solution deployment within the AWS environment from a fiduciary and security perspective.

Client Engagement and Innovation

  • Collaborate with businesses, startups, and community organizations to understand their challenges and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to clients to showcase the transformative potential of AI and cloud technologies in solving business problems and creating new opportunities.
  • Support clients in refining and scaling existing AI solutions and exploring new opportunities for AI-driven innovation.

Student Internship Program Management

  • Manage AIDP’s student internship program, guiding interns on applied AI/ML projects.
  • Supervise and mentor students across various disciplines in building and deploying solutions aligned with client needs.

Knowledge Sharing and Advocacy

  • Participate in knowledge-sharing activities, including workshops, seminars, and client-facing presentations, to promote the value of cloud and AI technologies.
  • Stay updated on AI/ML and cloud trends to foster a culture of innovation within AIDP and client organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • Experience in AI/ML application development and deployment.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience in cloud architecture and AI solution development, with a proven track record of delivering successful projects in AWS environments.
  • Proficiency in AWS cloud tools and services, such as AWS Gen AI, Amazon Bedrock, and other AWS tools.
  • Must be proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java, or similar).
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify innovative solutions to complex technical challenges.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Machine Learning.
  • Experience with ETL, AWS Glue, Redshift, or Spark.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD, infrastructure as code (CloudFormation, Terraform), TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, AWS SageMaker.
  • Knowledge of AWS security tools and regulatory standards (GDPR, HIPAA).
