Position Summary

Reporting to the Clinic Director for day-to-day operational matters, and to the Director of Health Services, Informatics and Quality Supervisor for functional matters such as evaluation, resources, and training, the MSK Medical Office Assistant is based at the MacEwan University Health Centre and is responsible for coordinating, triaging, and appointing all incoming musculoskeletal (MSK) medicine referrals. Additionally, the MSK Medical Office Assistant is responsible for supporting the MSK physicians with routine Medical Office Assistant duties, which include but are not limited to, communication with patients and other allied health staff, rooming, and assisting with procedures.

Duties 

Referral management and coordination

  • Triaging incoming referrals for appropriateness. Appointing and communicating back to patients and referring clinics the appointment details and instructions.
  • Managing the waitlist by priority.
  • Creating charts and adding all relevant information from NetCare for incoming accepted referrals.

Provide clinical and clerical support to MSK physicians

  • Communicates with patients by phone
  • Greet and room patients
  • Initiate requisitions
  • Performs vitals
  • Updates electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Other miscellaneous duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Medical Office Assistant or Medical Administration course. Equivalent combinations of experience may be considered.
  • Experience in EMR environments.
  • Advanced computer skills (Word, Excel, Google Suite, Zoom).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Superior patient interaction skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in medical terminology and medical record codes preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years medical office experience; specialty service preferred.
