This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

The successful candidate will be offered an appointment in accordance with the Faculty Service Officer Agreement. This position has a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $100,458 to $140,802.

Location - This role is in-person at North Campus, Edmonton.

Working for the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences 

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences offers interdisciplinary approaches to diverse teaching and research themes. Position Summary

The Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) Facility Lab Manager is a cornerstone of the Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, overseeing one of Canada's premier geochemical research laboratories within the Canadian Centre for Isotopic Microanalysis (CCIM). This role manages approximately $2 million in advanced analytical instrumentation—including multi-collector and quadrupole ICP-MS systems—and supports both laser ablation and solution-based workflows.

The Lab Manager is responsible for the daily operation of the facility, delivering high-precision isotopic and trace element analyses plus laser ablation U-Pb geochronology to internal and external clients, training highly qualified personnel, developing innovative methodologies, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the lab through effective cost management.

The position also supervises technical staff and contributes to graduate teaching, playing a key role in maintaining the lab’s international reputation for excellence in geochemical analysis.

Duties 

Current duties include:

  • Operation, maintenance, and repair of a Nu Plasma multi-collector ICPMS, Neptune Plus multi-collector ICPMS, quadrupole ICPMS (Thermo Scientific iCAP-Q) instruments and 3 single-collector magnetic sector ICPMS instruments (2 Element 2XRs and Nu Attom), along with associated equipment such as auto-sampling devices and laser ablation systems 
  • Developing new and improving existing analytical methods for isotopic and trace element analysis to support the research needs of Earth & Atmospheric Science faculty
  • Scheduling and training instrument users
  • Assessing and implementing lab safety protocols, data analysis and quality control for internal and external clients
  • Oversight of mineral separation facilities, a general wet chemistry laboratory
  • Co-teaching an analytical methods course as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Earth Sciences, Geology, or related field
  • Experience in ICPMS and TIMS instrumentation, including the running of both single and multi-collector plasma mass spectrometer as well as thermal ionization mass spectrometers.
  • Expertise in laser ablation ICPMS analyses and data reduction
  • Expertise in column chromatography separation for Sr, Pb-Pb, U-Pb, Nd, Hf
  • Mineral separation of perovskite and laser ablation U-Pb dating of perovskite

Preferred Qualifications

  • PDF experience in Earth Sciences, Geology, or a related field
  • Experience in geochronology, geochemistry of different rock types
  • Expertise in column chromatography separation for Sr, Pb-Pb, U-Pb, Nd, Hf
  • Mineral separation of perovskite and U-Pb dating of perovskite
  • A proven publication record in international journals
  • Experience of delivering presentations at international conferences
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repairing ICP mass spectrometers
