This position has a term length of one year plus one day from the date of hire and offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Working for the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP)

The Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) is both an online and on-campus Bachelor of Education cohort program foregrounding Indigenous values and methods of teaching, learning, and knowing. This program works towards developing a greater understanding of Indigenous culture and perspectives on teaching and learning, primarily in schools where Indigenous children are learning. Our goal is to improve the educational experiences of Indigenous children by increasing the number of Indigenous teachers in communities all over Alberta.

Position

The ATEP Academic Advisor provides a first point of contact for current and prospective students and provides accurate delivery of information on academic program requirements, deadlines, and university/faculty policies and procedures. The Advisor determines student course selection and registration, and makes decisions on the satisfaction of degree requirements, academic standing, academic deadlines, and the acceptability of exchange and/or transfer credit. The Advisor may provide advice on academic exchanges or course transfers. The Advisor may be called on to assess student life issues or refer students to other resources. The Advisor escalates to their supervisor issues that may affect the success of a student or are outside of decision-making authority.

As a member of the advising team and the ATEP staff as a whole, the ATEP Academic Advisor contributes to collaborative efforts toward program planning, admissions strategies, and initiatives within the Faculty of Education and with other university units to reduce barriers to enrollment and completion and improve student outcomes.

Duties

  • Prospective advising: Duties include advising prospective students on potential transfer credit, providing a plan to meet admission requirements, and guiding prospective students through the application process.
  • Application assessment: Duties include processing applications for program admission from inquiry to decision stage and ensuring completeness of required information (e.g., transcripts, reference letters, etc.).
  • Program advising, post-acceptance: Duties include registering students in all courses and advising new and continuing students on program-related matters such as academic standing, GPA calculations and scenarios, program changes, potential transfer credit and/or PLAR, and advanced program planning. 
  • Program decisions: Duties include approving/denying program decisions such as course-overload applications and transfer credits.
  • Convocation and program completion: Duties include completing convocation clearing for graduates to ensure full degree requirements are met.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience working with Indigenous students.
  • Understanding and possession of a strong knowledge base of issues pertinent in Indigenous communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of the cultural knowledge and perspective required to connect with Indigenous communities, schools and students, plus knowledge of Treaty 6 communities, is an asset.
  • The ability to speak and communicate in any Indigenous language is an asset.
  • Training and experience with university administrative systems in student administration, including PeopleSoft/Campus Solutions, Electronic Document Records Management/Alfresc,o and the Undergraduate Admission System (Slate).
