Working for the Department of Physical Therapy

The Department of Physical Therapy is part of the University of Alberta Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, the only free-standing faculty of its kind in North America. Housed in historic Corbett Hall in Edmonton, the Department of Physical Therapy has expanded to include a satellite program at the University of Calgary Downtown Campus in Calgary.

Over the course of its 50-year history, the Department has consistently been recognized for professional, scholarly and academic excellence, and has established a reputation as one of the premier Physical Therapy programs in North America.

Position Summary

The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) has full responsibility for the administrative function of the Department of Physical Therapy Student Clinic. This includes client communication; scheduling patients and clinicians; managing patient files and database systems; maintaining financial records and processes; implementing initial screening and referrals; supporting reception desk; and maintaining and ordering equipment. The PTA brings forward recommendations for improving Clinic processes and procedures to the Department Chair or Department Coordinator as appropriate.

The position has a significant role within the MScPT program. The PTA is the lab equipment coordinator for the PTAs and instructors at the MScPT Program’s satellite campuses. Retaining a general oversight over department activities, day-to-day priorities changes to support the on-going needs of stakeholders. The PTA also assists the preparations and execution of some MScPT labs, practical exams, MMI and orientation. In-person support for all on-site activities is necessary.

Under the direction of the Department of Physical Therapy Chair, Associate Chair and Block Coordinators, the Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) prepares and maintains lab space for the Master of Science in Physical Therapy (MScPT) program labs and is responsible for lab equipment and supplies. Under the direction of the Department Coordinator, the PTA contributes to the administrative operations of the Corbett Hall Student Physical Therapy Clinic by orienting students, troubleshooting technical issues, scheduling appointments, maintaining records, and facilitating teaching and patient care. Having a high-level understanding of the Department calendar and needs of clinic is necessary to adapt to dynamic time-sensitive situations.

Duties 

MScPT Labs

  • Maintains lab equipment and supplies and lab inventories
  • Provide moderate maintenance of equipment(Hi-Lo beds, wheelchairs, walkers)
  • Under the direction of the Associate Chair and Block Leaders, sets up and takes down equipment / supplies for each MScPT lab
  • Coordinates laundry services for all Physical Therapy labs: collects soiled laundry, contacts laundry company for pick-up and stores fresh laundry
  • Ensures lab spaces are tidy and equipment stored properly
  • Supply all lab spaces with suitable sanitation products
  • Informs IT group if issues with distributed education equipment
  • Schedule annual inspections of therapeutic modalities
  • Support department adherence to asset tracking and registrations
  • Support satellite campus at Edmonton point of contact for IT issues
  • Assist with OSCE/MMI/Orientation prep and execution
  • Proctor written and practical examinations
  • Assist with practical exams, set up, take down, and directing students
  • TA/Assist some MScPT Program labs
  • Learn HSERC B-Line system to coordinate practical exam stations
  • Lab equipment coordinator for satellites
  • Plan and support the logistic of equipment during labs and exams
  • Acts as standardized patient for various practical exams/ filmed for learning modules
  • Inspect and maintain AED for Faculty of Rehab Med
  • Manage mailroom supplies and distribution of deliveries
  • Support visitors
  • Organize materials and supplies for student independent learning
  • Arrange logistics and procurement of equipment and materials as needed
  • Working knowledge of University of Alberta policies and procedures, compliance to mandates, and evolving changes on campus.

Corbett Hall Student Physical Therapy Clinic

  • Responsible for day to day administrative functions of the Student Clinic
  • Reports recommendations for improvements to processes or procedures to Chair or Student Clinic Coordinator as appropriate.
  • Schedules patients’ appointments, research clinics
  • Discuss patient demographic students are interested in and coordinate with clinical instructor to assign appropriate caseload
  • Maintains treatment area throughout the day
  • Orders and tracks use of clinic supplies and equipment with the use of SupplyNet
  • Photocopies, scans information into the patients’ records under the direction of the treating therapist
  • Maintains patient and clinic files, filing systems and databases
  • Collects treatment fees, issues receipts, provides Department Chair with deposits, arranging cash deposit, and maintains financial records of student clinic
  • Implements therapeutic interventions as assigned
  • May reinforce the Physical Therapist’s explanation and provide verbal instructions to patients regarding intervention plans
  • Assists Physical Therapist in evaluating the effectiveness of specific interventions in relation to identified patient outcomes
  • Contributes to the creation of a safe and effective practice environment
  • Offer superior interpersonal skills to build/maintain community relationships, create a safe student learning environment, and accommodating access to members of the public
  • Act as liaison for patients, student, staff, and instructors as needed

Instructional and Orientation Duties

  • Provides Guest Lecturers and Sessional Instructors with orientation to distributed learning systems and access to facilities
  • Coordinates and delivers new student orientation and training of clinic scheduling and documentation software and specialize therapeutic equipment
  • Assists with and delivers new student orientation of Clinic policies and procedures when necessary
  • Develop new or update existing instructional manuals for equipment, systems, and procedures

Minimum Qualifications

  • Physical Therapy Assistant or Rehabilitation Assistant diploma
  • Excellent organization and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail and performs duties with accuracy, tact, and maintains confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 2 years work experience in either a private physical therapy clinic (preferred) or hospital
  • Knowledge of University of Alberta procedures and processes is an asset
