Join our amazing team! The Sustainability Council’s mission is to uplift people and the planet. We are doing this by growing a vibrant community engaged in interdisciplinary teaching, learning, research and active citizenship at the University of Alberta. We host speaking events and conferences, develop and promote curricular programs, support research, provide opportunities for student leadership and spark interest in sustainability issues.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Sustainability Council (SC) Academic Director and the SC Operations Director, the Coordinator - Outreach and Design will actively coordinate and advance all engagement, outreach, communications/marketing, academic support, design, videography and photography work of the SC.

The Coordinator will work on and support Campus as a Living Lab, sustainability/Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the curriculum, SDG work at the SC and institutionally, and all online education opportunities and offerings. The role will actively liaise and work with U of A communications/marketing staff across the whole institution, including External Relations.

This role is integral to the SC team and very dynamic; it works with not only SC leadership and SC staff and volunteers but with multiple on- and off-campus stakeholders.  

Duties 

  • Support the design, delivery and content creation of sustainability courses (undergrad/grad, asynchronous/synchronous), experiential learning initiatives and the integration of SDGs across curricula.
  • Write and edit key SC content, including newsletters, articles and the annual report. This includes managing program tracking and analytics.
  • Lead the management and creation of content for the SC’s website and social media, all while tracking metrics and adapting content and promotional strategies.
  • Lead the production of graphic designs, videos and photography for various programs, events and initiatives.
  • Supervise Junior Staff and closely collaborate with SC Staff to meet the communications/marketing needs of all programs and various initiatives.
  • Act as the primary liaison with Central Communications and Faculty Communications Partners to advance the SC’s SDG and comms goals and all collaborative SC-institutional goals.
  • Work to align all collateral and assets with brand guidelines and keep up to date with central news and implement any changes, updates and/or improvements.
  • Provide coverage and project support, as needed. This would include participating in all key SC meetings, processes and/or any new independent or collaborative initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two-year diploma in journalism, professional writing, marketing, communications, graphic design or sustainability communications. 
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience working in communications, marketing, and design.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, Google Drive, meeting applications (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams), email, internet use, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Canva and website management systems.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Digital SLR photography, videography, video production and design.
  • Demonstrated experience in journalistic writing, copywriting, copyediting, content marketing and storytelling, with the ability to develop content for various print and digital channels.
  • Detail-oriented, with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strengths in interviewing, synthesis, coordination, multitasking and time management, paired with sound judgment, resourcefulness and a strong work ethic.
  • Knowledge of sustainability, SDGs, and University of Alberta/SC initiatives. 
  • Demonstrated leadership, diplomacy and relationship-building skills to professionally represent the Sustainability Council and the University of Alberta.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively, quickly and with a solutions-oriented approach.
  • Additional education in visual communications, photography and videography.
  • Bilingualism (French/English).
  • Experience with web systems like Cascade.
  • Experience with post-secondary institutions or a large corporate or government environment.
