University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS) is an operational unit within University Services, Operations and Finance (USOF). As the public safety agency for the University community, UAPS works to ensure the safety and security of students, staff and the general public.

Position Summary

University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS) is looking for an Investigator to join the Organizational Security Services Section. Reporting to the Inspector, the Investigator conducts objective, thorough and unbiased investigations into matters of serious misconduct or risk.

Duties 

  • Receives assignments and direction from the Manager to conduct investigations; meets with the Manager on a daily basis to provide investigative updates; keeps the Manager and/or Director apprised of any immediate concerns related to ongoing investigations
  • Assesses the scope of the investigation and determines the methodology to carry out the investigation, including the need to evaluate the demand for specialized assistance or support; prioritizes investigations based upon immediate circumstance and risk
  • Identify issues and provide timely and appropriate strategies to mitigate risk; elevates identified issues/concerns to the Inspector and the Director
  • Follows best practice with a trauma-informed approach with complainants, witnesses and subjects of investigations which allege misconduct under University policies, such as the Student Conduct Policy
  • Gather and analyze evidence in accordance with rules of evidence and the law with respect to recognized investigative procedures and as prescribed by UAPS policy and procedures
  • Prepare comprehensive and timely reports of investigations and correspondence related to the investigations as required; make recommendations to the Inspector regarding action to be taken regarding the investigation
  • Provides assistance to the Inspector in the preparation of non-academic discipline files by obtaining evidence and preparing Investigative Summaries for review by the Inspector
  • Identify risks and develop mitigation strategies
  • Testify in court or other tribunals as required; provide investigative support to Patrol Services Division through expertise, guidance and training

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma supplemented with Police & Investigations Diploma
  • Able to obtain Community Peace Officer Level 1 status
  • 5 or more years of law enforcement experience with 3 or more years of specialized investigation experience
  • Experience with quasi-judicial hearings or fair decision-making processes
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and manage multiple investigations
  • Ability to analyze and interpret policies and legislation
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree in Criminal Justice or Social Sciences
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the various areas within the University community, its policies and procedures, etc.
  • Extensive investigative experience
