In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $59,822 to $82,266. This position has an initial appointment of 1 year with the possibility of renewal.

Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

(iSMART), the Institute for Smart Augmentative and Restorative Technologies and Health Innovations at the UofA, is a multi-faculty, multidisciplinary Institute, has unparalleled infrastructure; a worldwide network of collaborators; and a unique concentration of world leaders in wearable technologies and textiles, healthcare, critical disability studies, medical humanities, social justice, and fine arts. We have successfully developed products, policies, and practice guidelines that were all driven by unmet user and healthcare needs.

Position Summary

The Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta is seeking a Project Coordinator to join the Technology & Textiles Working Group (TTWG) within the Smartwear Revolution—a cutting-edge, transdisciplinary research initiative funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund. This team brings together engineers, material scientists, clinicians, artists, and people with lived experience to co-create wearable smart textiles that enhance strength, mobility, and independence for aging adults and people with disabilities.

The TTWG develops integrated sensor fabrics, power systems, control platforms, and advanced textile structures to address real-world needs. Reporting to the Senior Research Administrator and TTWG Lead, the Project Coordinator will manage research operations across multiple disciplines and support collaborations with academic, clinical, and industry partners.

Duties 

• Coordinate all TTWG research streams (sensors, actuators, batteries, AI/control systems, and textiles)
• Develop and maintain project documentation (Gantt charts, milestones, risk plans, etc.)
• Organize interdisciplinary team meetings, workshops, and deliverable tracking
• Facilitate collaboration between Co-Investigators, industry partners, and end-users
• Oversee data management plans and ethics protocols; liaise with ethics boards and regulatory bodies
• Manage budget tracking, procurement, travel logistics, and financial reporting
• Support IP protection and technology transfer activities in coordination with internal offices
• Contribute to public presentations, reports, and knowledge mobilization materials
• Ensure alignment of sub-team outputs with overall project goals and timelines

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field; PhD or postdoctoral experience is an asset
• Minimum 3 years of experience leading or supporting complex, interdisciplinary research or industrial projects
• Background in engineering, textiles, materials science, biomedical research, or technology integration
• Experience managing human-participant research and coordinating ethics submissions
• Proficiency in MS Office, Google Workspace, project management platforms (e.g., Monday.com, Asana), and budgeting tools (e.g., Excel)
• Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
• Demonstrated commitment to accessibility, EDI, and inclusive research practices

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of smart textile manufacturing, polymer science, or control systems/AI
• Experience with technology transfer, intellectual property, or regulatory compliance
• Familiarity with University of Alberta systems (e.g., PeopleSoft) and industry collaboration workflows
• Experience managing data security and compliance for sensitive research
• Fluency in French or Indigenous languages is an asset
