Working for the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology

As part of the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology serves as an academic Centre of Excellence in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Pathology, Environmental Health Sciences and Toxicology through excellence in education, research, and clinical service delivery in partnership with Alberta Precision Laboratories.

Position Summary

This position will provide technical support to help accomplish specific aims outlined by the principal investigator, and will implement and optimize experiments for the principle investigator or designates. The laboratory technologist will help with in vitro and in vivo (animal) studies overseen by graduate students in the laboratory.

Duties 

In vivo drug evaluation on patient-derived/cell line-derived xenograft tumor models:

  • Assist graduate students in in vivo drug evaluation study on animal xenograft tumor models (1-2 experiments per month)

In vitro/In vivo patient-derived tumor model development:

  • Help graduate students in developing cancer cell lines/tumor lines (1 line per month).

Other Duties:

  • Participating in regular laboratory meetings and providing updates on the status of animal studies, including inventory of animals in the anima care facility.
  • Data analysis, reporting, and presentation of results.
  • Planning of experiments through autonomous research design and execution, including evaluating literature.
  • Order materials for the project.

Qualifications

  • Education requirement: BSc
  • Previous experience working with animals preferred
