Location -  This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Working for the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) 

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) offers interdisciplinary approaches to diverse teaching and research themes. It is home to a diversity of programs, offering undergraduate and graduate teaching across the natural and social sciences. EAS is home to the School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP), which will be the candidate’s primary affiliation.    

Position Summary

Dr. Emily Grise is recruiting a part-time research coordinator to support research activities and partner engagement in the Understanding & Responding to Public Transit Needs of Women research project. We are seeking a highly organized and motivated individual to support our research team and project partners (e.g. transit agencies, municipalities and Provincial departments). This role involves coordinating and overseeing study activities, managing data collection efforts, and providing logistical and administrative support. The ideal candidate will also play a key role in communicating research findings through social media, assisting in the preparation of presentations, and contributing to the development of policy briefs and other knowledge translation materials.

About the project and research team

This research project extends previous research conducted by the team, Understanding and Responding to the Transit Needs of Women in Canada (read the final report here). This exciting research project convenes 14 partners from across Canada, including public transit agencies, planning authorities, and ministries.

The research team is led by Dr. Emily Grisé, Assistant Professor in the School of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Alberta. Dr. Grisé leads a growing research program focused on public transit planning and operations, inclusive mobility for traditionally underserved populations, and the evaluation of emerging transportation technologies.

She is joined by:

  • Dr. Genevieve Boisjoly, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Geological, and Mining Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal.
  • Dr. Léa Ravensbergen, Assistant Professor in the School of Earth, Environment & Society at McMaster University.
  • Dr. Martin Trépanier, Full Professor at Polytechnique Montréal.
  • David Cooper, Principal of Leading Mobility Consulting.

This is a one-year position, including a three-month probationary period, with the possibility of renewal or extension based on performance and project needs. The role requires a minimum commitment of 12 hours per week, with compensation commensurate with experience and relevant qualifications.

Duties 

  • Collaborate with researchers and project partners to plan and implement study activities
  • Coordinate data collection processes and ensure data quality and integrity
  • Provide support for events, including workshops, meetings, and public engagements (some travel may be required to support in-person activities such as participation at the annual research symposium which is typically held as a part of the fall Canadian Urban Transit Association conference)
  • Manage administrative tasks related to the project’s operations (i.e. meeting grant reporting requirements, scheduling meetings, applying for research ethics)
  • Develop and manage content for engagement through social media to share research updates and findings
  • Maintain and update the project website
  • Document editing and formatting support
  • Assist in preparing presentations, reports, and policy briefs for various audiences     

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Workplace proficiency in both English and French 
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in urban planning, geography, engineering, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated understanding and interest in transportation planning and policy
  • 1 year or equivalent experience working in project management for interdisciplinary research
