Working for the Transportation Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Transportation Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is focused on addressing transportation's environmental, social, and economic aspects, cultivating sustainable and inclusive solutions for a greener future. The team's collective research work covers diverse aspects of transportation engineering, planning, and design across modes of transportation, with broad inclusion of infrastructure, operations, and analysis principles. Additionally, they evaluate and implement innovative technologies, traffic management strategies, sustainable transportation practices, and resilient measures to handle disruptions.
Position Summary
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the research group led by Dr. Tae J. Kwon. Dr. Kwon's research program focuses on intelligent transportation systems, traffic mobility, geospatial modeling, advanced spatial analytics, infrastructure planning and winter road maintenance operations.
The selected candidate will contribute to two major collaborative research initiatives with the City of Edmonton and various international partners, including state DOTs. The projects broadly involve advanced multimodal AI techniques, deep learning, computer vision, geospatial analytics, and geostatistical modeling to address critical transportation engineering challenges. Key research themes include citywide traffic volume estimation, infrastructure planning, winter road condition monitoring and forecasting, and strategic optimization of transportation monitoring systems.
The candidate will be responsible for conducting innovative research using advanced analytical techniques, analyzing large-scale transportation datasets, developing and validating predictive models, and collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams and stakeholders. They will also be expected to actively prepare manuscripts, technical reports, presentations, and participate in disseminating research findings.
Duties
- Design experiments, research methods, data collection protocols, and standards.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate data collection, analysis, and result interpretation.
- Assist in developing and implementing computational programs.
- Contribute to research paper writing, presentation preparation, and publication.
- Present findings in meetings, seminars, conferences, and related forums.
- Facilitate communication with external partners.
- Lead and coordinate the work of graduate student researchers.
- Prepare research proposals and reports.
- Support program-related administrative tasks.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Engineering or Computing Science with a strong focus on urban transportation.
- Proficiency in deep learning and multimodal AI, computer vision and image-based modeling, traffic modeling and simulation, and geospatial analysis.
- Demonstrated expertise in utilizing multimodal AI and advanced geospatial analytics for winter road maintenance and traffic management applications.
- Skilled in GIS tools, CAD, and Python programming.
- Proven track record of refereed journal publications.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary and municipal partners.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, with strong self-initiative.
