The University of Alberta is committed to respectful relations with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples as directed by the Indigenous institutional Strategic Plan “Braiding Past, Present, and Future.” Indigenous Recruitment plays a key role in supporting the goals of Braiding through how we recruit prospective Indigenous learners.
Position
This exciting and diverse position will be responsible for coordinating Indigenous recruitment across Treaty 6, 7, 8 and the North on behalf of the University of Alberta. This position is focused on executing the Indigenous recruitment strategy, growing relationships with Indigenous communities, developing tactical Indigenous recruitment plans and maintaining pathways between high schools and post-secondary institutions including Tribal Colleges. This position is a key connector in the Indigenous recruitment community, driving collaboration and support for recruitment initiatives institution-wide. Currently reporting to the Associate Registrar, the Indigenous Recruitment Coordinator is responsible for the tactical dissemination of information and effective promotion of the University of Alberta to prospective First Nations, Métis, and Inuit learners.
Travel within Alberta and overtime is required in this position, which includes driving a University of Alberta fleet vehicle to local, rural and on reserve recruitment events. The hours of work for this position may be varied, including a requirement to work evenings and weekends.
Duties
- Develops and implements tactical plans that support the recruitment of Indigenous learners throughout Treaty 6, 7, 8, and the North, especially First Nations high schools, Indigenous-run education centres, outreach schools, and upgrading centres.
- Engages with and is committed to maintaining relationships, communication, and collaboration with key Indigenous communities across Treaty 6, 7, 8 and The North, focusing on building strong relationships with Elders, school leadership, and academic supporters.
- Analyzes statistical data on application/registration/yield Indigenous enrolment trends in target regions and schools, supplemented by historical, cultural, and systemic impacts on trends.
- Leads reviewing of recruitment publications/presentations content, particularly Indigenous guidebooks, brochures, general presentation, web content and Indigenous content in stakeholder material across campus.
- Acts as a single point-of-contact for expert support of Indigenous student advisors in faculties and service units regarding Indigenous transfer student success.
- Works closely with the Indigenous Student Recruiter providing training, direction, coaching and mentorship.
- Attends important social and cultural events like pow wow, round dance, and graduations hosted by Indigenous communities to celebrate Indigenous learners.
- Promotes the University of Alberta at various recruitment events to prospective Indigenous high school students and their parents, including extensive public speaking.
- Supports the execution of special events, including Community Events Engagement, Indigenous Student Discovery VIP Tours, Indigenous Student Experience at Open House and other special events as required.
- Travels across Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Yukon, and Northwest Territories targeting select high schools, communities, and special events.
- Responds to prospective student inquiries through phone and email.
- Maintains a strong and significant working relationship with First Peoples’ House and Indigenous Advisors and Recruiters in Colleges, Faculties and Service Units at the University along with the Student Recruitment Centre of Expertise Recruitment Service Partners.
- Holds a seat on the Indigenous Recruiter Circle.
- Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Undergraduate Degree or equivalent; preference for a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Alberta.
- At least 2 years of experience in student recruitment or community outreach role; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Experience working closely with Indigenous communities.
- Demonstrated understanding of the cultural knowledge and perspective required to connect with Indigenous communities, schools and students, plus knowledge of Treaty 6, 7, and 8 communities.
- Strong public speaking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with high attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, time management and customer service skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and maintain high levels of professionalism.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a large institutional environment with a variety of stakeholders from a variety of disciplines.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License (non-GDL) is mandatory; plus a 3-year driver's abstract must be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong preference for First Nations, Métis, or Inuit applicants.
- Familiarity with Indigenous Post-Secondary Institutions and transfer student processes is an asset.
- Ability to speak and communicate in any Indigenous language is an asset.
- Knowledge of University of Alberta policies and procedures is an asset.
