This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

This position is in-person and is located in Edmonton, Alberta in the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy.

The School of Dentistry invites applications for a part-time (three days per week), non-tenure track faculty position as the Medical Curriculum Lead- DDS Program.  The position has an anticipated start date of June 2024. The successful candidate will be responsible for oversight, review and delivery of biomedical sciences content within the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Internal applicants are welcome to apply.

Background

Term of Appointment: Part-time, 0.6 FTE, three-year contract under the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) Agreement. Academic rank and salary will be based on the incumbent’s qualifications, experience and achievements.

Duties

  1. In collaboration with DDS Course Directors and discipline instructors, develops an integrated curriculum, which blends biomedical content and clinical concepts across all four (4) years of the DDS program.
  2. Responsible for the development, review, and revision of learning outcomes, materials and content within the biomedical curriculum in each of the 10 courses in Years 1 and 2 of the DDS program.
  3. Delivers instruction of the biomedical content, employing multiple teaching methods including case-based instruction, large- and small-group discussion, lecture, demonstration, simulation, team-based learning, and asynchronous education.
  4. Responsible for ensuring that when biomedical content is particularly emphasized for the management of patients in a dental office (dental relevance sessions) that it is current, correct, and appropriate. 
  5. Collaborates with FOMD MD Program Course Coordinators, instructors, anatomy faculty and administrative support staff, to identify and utilize resources to support medically-focused content, connections, and intersects for DDS students
  6. Provides formative and summative assessment of dental student performance within the biomedical science curriculum at an appropriate level for entry to practice for a beginning Dentist.
  7. Provides individual support, feedback, remediation and re-assessment to dental students as needed.
  8. Works with the Stream Lead DDS Foundational Sciences to ensure that the biomedical curriculum content is sequenced appropriately and kept current.
  9. Works closely with Course Directors, DDS Curriculum Committee, fellow faculty, and key administrators to ensure that the biomedical curriculum meets accreditation and entry to practice standards for a beginning Dentist.   
  10. Serves the academic community through participations in institutional governance, such as committee work and other administrative duties
  11. Participates in continuing medical and dental education events and conferences. 

Applicants will have MD or equivalent degree from a recognized medical faculty/school preferred.  At least three (3) years’ experience (post-residency training) working as a medical practitioner and providing patient care in a hospital, community or private practice setting preferred.

Previous teaching experience within a healthcare professional training program preferred. Specific dental knowledge is not required but would be an asset.

Current, evidence-based knowledge and experience of patient care in general medicine, including the pathophysiology, diagnosis, management and treatment of common medical conditions within the following areas: Foundations of Medicine, Anatomy, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Cardiology, Pulmonary, Renal, Musculoskeletal, Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Psychiatry, Neuroscience and organs of special senses, Oncology.

Excellent communication and public speaking skills. Comfortable with using educational technologies. 

Passion for teaching, mentoring, and supporting students. Commitment to communicating to dental students the importance of having a comprehensive understanding of biomedical content in order to provide safe and effective oral healthcare.
