Working for the Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology

This position is within the Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology (REES), part of the Faculty of Agricultural, Life, and Environmental Sciences (ALES) at the University of Alberta.

Position 

The successful candidate will work closely with Drs. Xiaoli Fan and Feng Qiu, as well as an interdisciplinary team of experts, on an economic valuation of soil data project funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of 2 years, of which the first 6 months will be a probationary period. Subsequent employment is determined based on the performance, the availability of funds, and the continued need for the position.

The salary ranges from $60,000 to $65,000 CAN per annum. In addition, this position offers a benefits package as outlined in University of Alberta Postdoctoral Fellows Benefits.

Duties 

  • Developing a model that optimizes land allocation across various uses.
  • Assessing the economic, environmental, and social value of publicly available soil data for land conservation, planning, and management decisions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in agricultural and applied economics, operations research, or a closely related field.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with GIS analysis.
  • Prior exposure to land use modeling.
  • Proficiency in statistical software including STATA, R, GAMS, and MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of simulation and optimization methods and tools.
