Forensic Nursing Mental Health Climate Change

About

I am a Registered Nurse with a BScN (2014), a Master of Nursing from the University of Saskatchewan (2020) and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Ottawa (2024). My clinical experience in nursing includes forensic psychiatric nursing, mental health emergency, and clinical nurse education at the undergraduate level. Prior to becoming a Registered Nurse I worked for a decade in wildfire management in Alberta and across Canada.

I am an Editorial Board Member of The Journal of Forensic Nursing.

Research

I have two primary streams of research. The first is in forensic and correctional nursing. Here my work examines the intersections of incarceration, mental health, and access to healthcare services. My doctoral research focused on the aging prison population in Canadian federal penitentiaries and the obstacles these populations face in both accessing healthcare services and in securing early or compassionate release. Ongoing research will continue to focus on this population as individuals transition to the community. Other research topics in this stream include nursing practices in forensic psychiatric settings, and the intersection of mental health and online radicalization.

My second stream of research focuses on climate change, mental health, and populations disproportionately affected by climate change. Future research will examine the mental health concerns of wildland firefighters in relations to accelerating climate change. Other research topics include eco-anxiety in relation to climate change in Canada.

My research and publications lie within the emerging field of Critical Nursing Studies. Herein the application of poststructuralist perspectives inform critical (re)examination of nursing practices and phenomena. This research is primarily informed by the works of Michel Foucault, Julia Kristeva, and Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari.
