Forensic Nursing Mental Health Climate Change

About

I am a Registered Nurse with a BScN (2014), a Master of Nursing from the University of Saskatchewan (2020) and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Ottawa (2024). My clinical experience in nursing includes forensic psychiatric nursing, mental health emergency, and clinical nurse education at the undergraduate level. Prior to becoming a Registered Nurse I worked for a decade in wildfire management in Alberta and across Canada.

I am an Editorial Board Member of The Journal of Forensic Nursing.

Research

I have multiple areas of (at times) overlapping research interests. These include mental health, incarceration, climate change, power relations in nursing practices, and radicalization.

My clinical nursing background is primarily in forensic mental health – marginalization at the intersection of mental health and the criminal justice system. My experiences here have guided many of my current research topics. These include the transition of aging incarcerated persons into the community, the provision of care to incarcerated persons within hospital settings, and critical examination of nursing practices within forensic and correctional settings. This also includes masculinity, mental health, online radicalization and radicalization to violence in the alt-right.

My work in wildfire management influences my second major area of research. I am particularly interested in mental health and climate change related to wildfires. This includes front-line workers and communities affected by wildfire, including Indigenous communities. Related topics include eco-anxiety in relation to climate change and wildfire in Canada.

I am also currently developing a project to examine the provision of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) where mental illness is the sole underlying condition. Though not yet permitted in Canada, legislation is forthcoming, and I am interested in practitioner perspectives on this topic.

Finally, much of my work and publications lie within the emerging field of Critical Nursing Studies, which critically examines current nursing practices and taken-for-granted assumptions in the provision of care. My work relies primarily on poststructuralist perspectives, informed by the works of Michel Foucault, Julia Kristeva, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, and Judith Butler.

I am currently accepting MN students. I can also accept PhD students with co-supervision. Feel free to reach out if you are interested in any of these topics. I prefer students who are familiar with critical perspectives. I also prefer students who have at least 2 years of work experience as nurses (post-undergrad).

This includes formulating clinical questions, systematic searching of electronic databases, reading, interpreting and critically appraising health research. Emphasis is on developing thinking and information literacy skills necessary to be an astute research consumer, and using evidence to inform clinical decision making. Note: Available only to nursing students in the Collaborative/Honors Program, After Degree/After Degree Honors Program or RPN-BScN Program. Prerequisite for Collaborative/Honors Program students: NURS 211 (or NURS 341). Credit may be obtained for only one of NURS 311 or 301.
