Forensic Nursing Mental Health Climate Change Wildfire Critical Theory

About

I am a Registered Nurse with a BScN (2014), a Master of Nursing from the University of Saskatchewan (2020) and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Ottawa (2024). My clinical experience includes forensic psychiatric nursing, mental health emergency, and clinical nurse education at the undergraduate level. Prior to becoming a Registered Nurse I worked for a decade in wildfire management in Alberta and across Canada.

I am an Editorial Board Member of The Journal of Forensic Nursing.

Research

I have multiple areas of (at times) overlapping research interests. These include mental health, incarceration, climate change, power relations in nursing practices, critical perspectives in nursing, and radicalization.

Current Projects:

The Alberta Wildfire Project: examination of the intersection of mental health and climate change in seasonally employed wildland firefighters in Alberta. This project consisted of qualitative interviews with wildland firefighters in Alberta, and is currently in the data analysis stage. Supported by the University of Alberta Strategic Research Initiatives Fund.

Wildfire and Indigenous Community Mental Health: examination of the mental health impacts of wildfire in Indigenous communities in Alberta. This is a participatory research project and is currently in development with a partner community. Supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (Insight Development Grant).

Pending Projects (awaiting funding details):

Wildfire Mental Health Mutual Aid: A Participatory Project: developing a peer support network for wildland firefighters in Alberta based on the principles of mutual aid.

Beyond Consent: Psychiatric Coercion in Canada (collaboration with researchers at University of Ottawa): an in-depth examination of coercive psychiatric practices across multiple realms.

Long-Term Care for Older Adults with a History of Sexual Offenses in the Canadian Context: A Critical Qualitative Analysis (collaboration with researchers at University of Ottawa): examination of obstacles to release to community-based long-term care facilities for aging incarcerated persons.

Additional/Future Projects:

The use of AI Chatbots for Mental Health Support: critical examination of personal use of AI Chatbots to provide mental health advice and support, and potential consequences. Consider both user and healthcare provider perspectives.

Medical Assistance in Dying where Mental Illness is the Sole Underlying Medical Condition: critical examination of future expansion of MAiD to those living with mental health diagnoses, including healthcare provider perspectives.

Online Radicalization and Mental Health: critical examination of the processes and factors that contribute to online radicalization, focussing on radicalization to violence, far right and alt-right tendencies.

Critical Nursing Studies: application of critical theory perspectives to interrogate nursing practices, theory and education. My theoretical/philosophical work employs the writings of Foucault, Kristeva, Deleuze & Guattari, and Judith Butler.

Potential Graduate Students:

If you are interested in pursuing any of these topics/projects as a graduate student under my supervision, please email me.

This course will explore concepts of health, wellness and illness across the lifespan and the nurse's role in promoting wellness. Maintaining a strength-based focus, the concept of development across the lifespan will be discussed. Students will be encouraged to consider the impact of biopsychosocial and cultural factors on development and how values, beliefs and attitudes affect health and illness perceptions and behaviors. Goals of Care, chronicity, and the impact of planetary health and genomics on health and wellness across the lifespan will also be introduced. Note: Available only to students in the Collaborative Program. Prerequisites: MMI 133 (or equivalent), NURS 106 (or NURS 140 and 150), and NURS 120. Corequisite: NURS 124, NURS 125.
