About

With a Bachelor of Science in 2018 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2024, both in Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta, Matthew has been a member of the U of A community for over 9 years. His PhD work focused on catalyst design in zinc-air batteries, specifically using atomic layer deposition to develop transition metal oxide based catalysts directly on the air electrode. His postdoctoral work is on solid oxide fuel cells and investigating the changes that occur to the microstructure after prolonged testing, particularly using electron microscopy techniques. His supervisor for both his PhD and postdoc is Dr. Douglas Ivey in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, with Dr. Ken Cadien also serving as a supervisor during his PhD studies. He is a past recipient of the prestigious NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship and the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship. His research and enthusiasm for science has been featured in numerous outreach events in collaboration with Future Energy Systems at the U of A.
