Dr. Patrick Chiu joined the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta as an Assistant Professor in 2024. His doctoral research focused on strengthening the policy advocacy functions of professional nursing organizations. Prior to joining the Faculty, he held several policy and professional practice positions in professional associations, regulatory bodies, and government. He holds a Bachelor of Science (BScN) from McMaster University (2012), Master of Public Health (MPH) from Simon Fraser University (2016), a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Alberta (2022), and a Certified Global Nurse Consultant (CGNC) designation through the International Council of Nurses & CGFNS. He currently serves as a Liaison to the United Nations (Economic and Social Council) for Sigma Nursing. Dr. Chiu is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria.

The overarching goal of Dr. Chiu's emerging program of research is to strengthen the nursing workforce, patient safety, and health systems through effective and responsive health professions regulation, innovative professional practice infrastructure, and effective policy advocacy of nursing organizations. Using knowledge syntheses, qualitative, and policy analysis methods, the objectives of his research include: a) examining how professional regulation can be improved and modernized to enhance public protection and enable healthcare professionals to practice safely, competently, and ethically within changing healthcare landscapes; b) developing conceptualizations of professional practice models that support health workforce development and shifting population health needs; and c) exploring how nursing organizations' policy advocacy work can be strengthened to optimize policy influence.
