Overview

Area of Study / Keywords

About

I obtained my PhD from the University of Mainz (Germany) in Nuclear Chemistry in 1999. After a brief postdoctoral stay at the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN) I continued research at the University of Mainz as a civil servant until 2007. In 2008 I was appointed Head of Radiochemistry and Director of Cyclotron at the McConnell Brain Imaging Center at the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) of McGill University. During my time at McGill University I held a Canada Research Chair in Molecular Imaging and Radiochemistry. I am currently an Associate Professor in Oncologic Imaging at the Faculty of Medicine at the MICF and Cross Cancer Center.

Research

My research group develops new imaging agents for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging in the field of oncology and neurology. Our current interests are the development of novel radiolabeling strategies for peptide and protein labeling for cancer imaging as well as introduction of Tropomyesin receptor kinase (TrK) receptor ligands for oncological and neurological imaging. We furthermore continue our research in nano particle PET platform development. We work with a variety of different radionuclides such as carbon-11, fluorine-18, gallium-68, different radioisotopes of iodine and soon copper-64. We welcome undergraduate- as well as graduate students with a chemistry or pharmacology background to contact us and inquire further information.

Courses

CHEM 405 - Special Topics in Chemistry

Prerequisites: a 300- level CHEM course and consent of Instructor; prerequisite courses vary, depending on topic. Course may be repeated for credit, provided there is no duplication of specific topic.

CHEM 669 - Special Topics in Bio-organic Chemistry

Advanced discussion of selected topics in modern bio-organic chemistry, drawn from one or more of the following: (1) natural products and secondary metabolism, (2) nucleic acid chemistry, and (3) organic and biophysical carbohydrate chemistry. Other topics appropriate to the category may also be offered. Course may be repeated for credit, provided there is no duplication of specific topic.

ONCOL 475 - Fundamentals of Radiopharmaceutical Sciences

Practical techniques in the use of radioisotopes in the life sciences. This course focuses on safe handling of radio-isotopes, measurement of radioactivity, performance of radiochemical reactions and the application of radionuclides in life sciences (99mTc-labeling and 18F-labeling). The accompanying seminar provides the necessary background knowledge to engage with the practical challenges of radionuclide handling. Credit cannot be obtained for both ONCOL 475 and 575.

ONCOL 575 - Fundamentals of Radiopharmaceutical Sciences

Practical techniques in the use of radioisotopes in the life sciences. This course focuses on safe handling of radio-isotopes, measurement of radioactivity, performance of radiochemical reactions and the application of radionuclides in life sciences (99mTc-labeling and 18F-labeling). The accompanying seminar provides the necessary background knowledge to engage with the practical challenges of radionuclide handling. Credit cannot be obtained for both ONCOL 475 and 575. Prerequisite: Consent of the Department.
