This foundational course in communication skills explores key aspects of learning in a global environment, including aspects of culture, history, diversity, language, and sustainable development, while also supporting English as an Additional Language (EAL) students in beginning their academic journey in a Canadian university setting. Through integrated practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, students will engage with authentic materials such as news articles, blogs, podcasts, and short talks. Classroom activities emphasize both social and academic communication, preparing students to participate in seminar-style discussions, delivering short presentations, and responding to a variety of intercultural texts. Written reflections will help students connect their own cultural perspectives with Canadian contexts, while also introducing the academic habits and critical thinking skills needed for success in a Canadian university environment. By the end of the course, students will be able to navigate everyday social situations, and actively interact, both in the classroom and on campus.
