SPH 406 - Public Health Biology

3 units (fi 6)(SECOND, 3-0-0)

School of Public Health

This course will provide an understanding of the biology of human health and disease as it affects public health. Evolutionary and organizational systems biology are used as a framework for understanding the root causes of disease (genetic, infectious and environmental) and the factors that make us susceptible or resistant to disease. We will examine the biological basis for current health promotion, disease prevention and control strategies. Topics span mechanisms responsible for genetic, nutritional, infectious, and chronic diseases and their effects on human populations. We also explore ways to effectively communicate biological concepts to non- scientific audiences to advocate for public health. A student may not receive credit for both SPH 406 and SPH 506.
