An introduction to the main methods in qualitative inquiry, data collection strategies, qualitative data analysis, rigor, ethics, and proposal preparation. Students may not receive credit for both COMM 597 (Introduction to Qualitative Inquiry) and MACE 550.

SPH 623 - Qualitative and Community-Based Approaches in Health Research

3 units (fi 6)(EITHER, 0-3S-0)

Theoretical understanding of qualitative and community-based research designs, including phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, biography and case study. Methods of data collection such as interviews, focus groups and participant observation. Strategies for data analysis and dissemination. Pre or corequisite: SPH 503 or consent of instructor. Note: Credit may not be obtained for both HPS 603 and SPH 623. Credit may not be obtained for both HECOL 603 and SPH 623.
