TAKWA 101 - Takwâkin 101

1.5 units (fi 3)(EITHER, 0-3S-0)

Takwâkin (fall) term course, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students build relationships through wâhkôhtowin (kinship) ways of knowing, guided by Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and the okiskinohamâkew (educator). Students explore identity, cultural teachings, land connection, and community supports while developing key academic skills. Students will engage in cultural practices, learn academic expectations, strengthen study and wellness strategies, and complete foundational tasks such as planning, research, presentations, and maintaining their GPA. This course sets the foundation to carry students throughout their educational journey. Restricted to students in the Transition Year Program.

Pipon (winter) term course, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students deepen relationships through wâhkôhtowin with guidance from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, former Transition Year Program students and the okiskinohamâkew. Students continue on in their cultural learning and strengthen academic skills by connecting with campus supports. Students will explore the course syllabus, file management systems, understand academic research, explore the university calendar and course enrollment through Bear Tracks, along with completing a faculty portfolio oral presentation and key planning that will move them into preparing for their program transfer.
